Neil and I once lived in the Westend of Vancouver, in English Bay where you kind of look over the open sea and where dreams come true. It was one of the best whereabouts in Vancouver where people gather in summer season everyday. Hundreds of thousands of people crowd the place especially around bay for the Celebration of Light fireworks competition each summer. Denman Street, Davie St and Robson Street are just a walk away from English Bay. In those Streets you can find most of the finest restaurants in Vancouver may it be casual dining, fast food, take-out or fast casual, family style and even a fine dining experience. I have been to 2 of the famous Izakaya restaurants nearby which is Guu with Garlic and Kingyo Japanese Restaurant. I liked both restaurants. They both have a unique way of doing things and have different recipes as well. I have been to Guu Original in Thurlow Street as well. In this blog, I would like to feature Guu with Garlic.
The Guu with Garlic Restaurant is situated on the corner of Robson and Bidwell Street. It is a busy restaurant especially on Fridays. If you are walking along Robson Street , you’ll notice people outside waiting for their turn to get in, that is Guu. It doesn’t matter how long the wait is. It’s about getting the experience and knowing Japanese culture. The servers yell the word “Irashaimase” which means “Welcome to this place!”.
As mentioned in my previous blog, Kara-age Chicken, the place was one of a kind in a nice way. They have a mini bar in the restaurant and they serve Japanese beer. You can see the chefs working on the orders. You don’t have to wait too long to get attended. If you have a big group, you can choose the low tables upstairs. Make sure you don’t forget to take off your shoes before you sit on the floor. A couple can choose to sit at the bar.
Karaage : Deep fried chicken with garlic mayo on side (our top favourite). The portions are for sharing. Make sure to order a variety and enjoy each dish!
They call this one Takoyaki, which is a deep fried octopus balls with tonkatsu sauce and mustard mayo. Great choice for only $4.00!!!
Yaki Udon, pan fried udon with beef, mushroom, green onion, soy sauce and butter for $8.50.
This is just one of their menus! They have 2 more menus and anyone can download them in this site : http://guu-izakaya.com/robson/
I haven’t had a dish in Guu that I did not like. Everything is excellent to me. So if you are visiting Vancouver, do not forget to stop by for lunch or dinner. This is one of the best Izakaya restaurant in beautiful Vancouver.
Best of luck!
